To clarify the pathogenesis implicating with oxidative stress on ascitessyndrome (AS) in broiler chickens, and prevent and cure it by antioxidation, 150 1-day-oldAA broiler chickens were divided randomly four groups , and fed with different diets, which were I (basic diet+energy+NaCl),II (basic diet +energy+NaCI+Se) ,III (basicdiet+energy+NaCl+Chinese herbs), IV (basic diet) . The other conditions such as lowtemperature, high moisture and poor ventilation were same. Se-Glutathoine-Peroxidase(Se-GSH-Px) activity of blood and liver, molonaldehyde (MDA) concentration in serum, relevent mineral elements concentration and free radicals level were investigated in eachgroups. The weight of liver, heart, body were measured. Pathology of liver, heart, lungwere examined.Results:(1) In group I (kefen diet-energy+NaCl, both free radical level and MDAconcentration in tissues were significantly higher (P<0.05) than others, and Se-GSH-Pxactivity was lower (P<0.05), ascites incidence rate and mortality were 22.85 % and 21.62%,significantly higher (P<0.01) than the other. The clinical symptoms and pathologicalchanges were more seriouse than others. The result suggested that high energy and excesssodium in diets might cause AS of broilers, and much free radical were produced in asciticbroilers. (2) In group IV (kefen diet) , both MDA content and free radical level in tissueswere higher than group II broilers, and GSH-Px activity were also lower than group II.Aascites incidence ration and mortality were 10% and 20%. The results suggested thatenvironmental conditions were some potential factors for the etiology of AS. (3) In groupII and group III, incidence rations and mortalities were 14.28% and 11.43%, 8.57% and3614.28%, respectively, the Se-GSH-Px activity were increased dramatically, and free radicallevel and MDA concentration were significantly lowei. than group I. This suggested that Sesupplementation in diet can increase Se level in tissues and decreased ascites incidence andmortality by antioxidation, and Chinese herbs complex also works similarly.Histopathological changes were slighter than others. (4)There were positive linerelationships between energy / sodium in diet and indexes of AS, MDA concentration, andfree radical level. Meanwhile, there was line ralationship between indexes of lipidperoxidation and that of AS.Conclusion:Hypoxia stress caused by all kinds of factors such as faster growing, low temperature, poor ventilation and so on, which really leaded to produce much freeradical in tissues of ascitic broilers. Supplemented Se and Chinese herbs complex in dietsmight prevent ascites syndrome by scanvenging free radicals.
