This article has analyzed the causes and characteristics of forest pests and reviewed the changes and development of the strategies used in forest pest control. It concludes that through the.three-stage approach, namely, pest prevention, coordinated control and comprehensive control, forest pest control in our country has finished the first stage of its course and has now come to its second stage梥ustainable control. The author holds that sustainable control is the requisite approach, the guiding principles and objectives of which should concentrate on the sustainable development of forest industry. The article has explained the definition and meaning of Sustainable Control, its theoretical basis and its relation with the sustainable development of forest industry. It has pointed out from a technical perspective that sustainable control is a complicated and systematic approach. Its scope of study includes the problems as to understanding the benefits of forest pest control, how to make better use of the constant pest-resistance of the forest itself, the promotion of biological control, the enforcing of monitoring and inspecting measures and strictly avoiding the entry of harmful pests. It also draws on human technology and experiences with respect to the pest situations of the farmland shelter-forest in the Hexi area. It has made a technical study of its measuring methods and criteria in the sustainable forest pe~st control. As a conclusion, some practical strategies of sustainable forest pest control in the Hexi area are proposed which include: strengthening the propagatio&and publicizing of the forest pest control issues, establishing and improving the regulations on the responsibility assignment system in pest control, improving domestic coordination and establishing a sound pest prevention system, paying more attention to the monitoring of pest situations, establishing a scientific reporting and monitoring system focusing on the key issues in pest prevention and control, establishing a comprehensive regional pest control system, improving the facilities and competence of the pest control personals, increasing financial investment in pest control and perfecting the fund raising and spending system, encouraging and promoting research work to improve the technologies of forest pest control.
