Image of aerial remote sensing, especial its color photograph (black-and-white photograph) could reflect and record the truly color or grayness of forestry character. On the contrary with TM, it had more steady-going determined character and higher resolving power. We could gain many quantitative and qualitative factors of forest from the aerial photograph, such as tree height, crown breadth, gradient, count, crown closure. The purpose of this article was tried to quantitatively detect forest using the digital image of aerial remote sensing, especial the research on the measurement of stand volume. Based on the color aerial photograph (1:8000), aerial photograph (1:5000) and the forest resources inventory data of 1978 in the Daxinggou bureau, Jilin province, we applied the technique of pattern cognizance to manually track and detect the visible crown in the digital image of the aerial remote sensing. Supported by the ArcView software, the spatial image of crown cluster was build and used the GIS technique to calculate the canopy area, perimeter and mean diameter was calculated and the stand volume was predicted by the canopy-d.b.h. model aerial photograph and cross section form of stem-volume model. Ultimately, we would finished the quantitative measurement of forest based on GIS digital image of aerial remote sensing. The result showed it was possible to predict the stand volume supported by the ArcView and the aerial photograph. This study was an attempt to evaluate stand volume according to GIS and paved a way for the forest management.
