The adjacent area of Jin-Shan-Meng is the arid and semi-arid area, located at the buffering area between sandy Eroded Plateau and Loess Plateau, including 11 counties. It is characterized with poor natural conditions and weakened wreaked ecological systems. This study uses the GIS tools to analyze the land use and cover change (LUCC) in the past 14 years, based on the remote sensing information and statistic data. By interpretation of 1986's and 2000's TM images, two kinds of land use types map in Jin-Shan-Meng adjacent area were compiled. The dynamic transfer date matrix of land use types in the given study area was also obtained through developing spatial information database and overlaying the two kinds of vector maps using ARC/INFO software. The preliminary results show that the intensity of land use has been increasing and spatial changes also greatThis study applies the basic theory and method of landscape ecology, fractal dimension, isolation and dominance as index to analyze the landscape pattern of fragile environment in the given study area. The result of the relevance analysis between LUCC and the driving forces in context of natural, economic, social and cultural factors, shows that key driving forces and driving dynamic mechanisms.Additionally, the Marko process are taken to forecast the landscape pattern of the given study area in the future. On such analysis, counter measures for sustainable development for economy and environment are suggested in hope of promoting the sound development of the gived study areas' economy and environment.
