This dissertation deals with the studies on pharmacological action and phytochemistry of traditional Chinese medicine herb, Cucurbita pepo cv Dayangua. The plant belongs to Cucurbita and is mainly distributed in Neimenggu Province. Its fruit is very bitter which is used to treat cold of human and infective diseases of poultry by residents in the locality. There have been few reports on the pharmacology and constituents of C. pepo cv Dayangua.Firstly pharmacological experiments were made on the crude extraction. The experiments' results indicated that C. pepo cv Dayangua can enhance the contractility of ex vivo intestine by testing the contraction range (p<0.01). It can inhibit the mouse reaction of glacial acetic acid significantly, and can raise its pain threshold of the hot-plate way (p<0.05). By testing the righting reflex, we found the extraction have synergism with Peutobarbital sodium in low-domain hypnosis dosage and can improve its hypnosis effect (p<0.05). In the anti-inflammatory experiment, it can inhibit the swelling level of mouse auricle caused by xylene (p<0.01), so do in the swelling level of rat feet caused by the white of egg and Freund's complete adjuvant (p<0.01). The results revealed that C. pepo cv Dayangua has strong anti-inflammatory effect. The 50% lethal dose (LD50) of the plant is 13.9g/kg calculated with Ka'rber method.Secondly in the course of the phytochemistry study we investigated the chemical constituents of C. pepo cv Dayangua forthe first time. As a result , seven compounds were isolated from the fruits of C. pepo cv Dayangua by means of chromatography on silica gel and recrystallization. On the basic of spectroscopic analysis (UV, IR, EI-MS, FAB-MS, 'HNMR and 13HNMR) and chemical methods, their structures were determined to be cerebroside, daucosterol, -sitosterol stigmasterol, Tritriacontane, stearic acid dotriacontane ester, 13(18)-oleanen-3-ol. All of them were obtained from this plant for the first time.
