Tobacco is one of the most important dry land cash crops with higher economic benefit in Shanxi province. During the recent years dry land maize has be spreading continuously in Shanxi. However, tobacco production has been restricted by some factors, such as late- development/ maturation and low quality, in virtue of maize as the preceding crop, and even the disadvantages in agricultural natural conditions, e.g. drought stress and the shortage of water resource, etc. and thus often resulting in hard to fulfill the public purchases plan confirmed by National Tobacco Bureau. Based on analyzing the data on tobacco production, and considering the related climate, market information and production practice, and deep understanding of its new utilization and importance, hereby, the relevant experiments were conducted in this research during 2003-2004 in the 4 locations of Lulia, Taihang, Taiyue and Zhongtiaoshan of Shanxi province, to study the optimum production practices to improve yield and quality of flue-cured tobacco cultivated after maize in the dry land, by studying the cultivar selecting, fertilizing, seedling, transplanting, and the measures to drought resistance, using complete randomizing design. The main results obtained are as follows:1. Cultivar 9606 had an obvious advantage over the conventional cultivar NC89 in the techirc and economic indexes, and could be an outstanding candidate for practical application and occasionally copulating with CF80 in the arid region of tobacco productionin Shanxi province.2. Early application of plastic multching for the dry land tobacco cultivation with wide (?)w planting of 45-50cm could be beneficial to improve drought resistance and growth and development of tobacco seedlings by increasing the soil moisture content before transplanting. Meanwhile, wide row planting was propitious to ameliorate population aeration and light transmission, and increase the light shining on the lower part...
