Studies On Effect Of Sodium Butyrate On The Structure Of Gut Mucous And Mucosal Immunity-associated Cell In Weaned Piglet

One hundred and eight healthy 28-day-old weaning pigs were divided into 4 groups in this study: Group â…  with basic diet and 0.1% sodium butyrate, Group â…¡ with basic diet and antibiotic, Group â…¢ with basic diet and antibiotic, 0.1% sodium butyrate, and Group â…£ with basic diet. After four weeks, the structure of mucous epithelium and mucosal immunity-associated cells were observed in the small intestine of weaning pigs by light and electron microscope. Results are as follows:(1) The epithelial structures of duodenum, jejunum and ileum were integrated, and their height of intestinal villus increased, especially in both groups of â…  and â…¢.(2) The microvillus of epithelium arranged closely and the thickness of cell coat increased in both groups of â…  and â…¢ than that of Group â…¡ and Group â…£.(3) The number of goblet cells in the Group III was larger than that of the other groups.(4) In the Group â… , the cell numbers were 40.2+7 (jejunum) and 32.1+5.7 (ileum) per 100 absorptive cells in the intraepithelial lymphocytes, and 1797 (jejunum) and 636 (ileum) per gut cross section in the mast cells, respectively. At the same time, the cell numbers both intraepithelial lymphocyte and mast cell in the Group â…¢ was larger than that of groups of â… , â…¡ and â…£ (P<0.05).Conclusion: This study indicated that sodium butyrate can be used to increase mucosal immunity-associated cell number, improving the morphology of intestinal epithelium, and promotes the digesting and absorbing and gut barrier function of piglets. This effect can be intensified by sodium butyrate / antibiotic combination.
