Henan fat-tailed sheep is a famous local breed which had once been a major sheep breed and is widely distributed in the center area of Henan province. It was cognizanced as one of the endangered livestock breeds by FAO in 1989. On purpose of preservation and utilization the breed better, the study was conducted to measure blood physiological and biochemistry characteristics, growth and development, reproductive performances and infectious status of gastrointestinal major parasites of sheep, sampled in central areas of habitat.1. Determination and analysis of blood physiological index in Henan fat -tailed sheepThe blood physiological indexes of 41 (19♀, 22♂ ) Henan fat-tailed sheep were determined . Osmotic fragility of RBC in Henan fat-tailed sheep is higher and ESR is lower than other sheep breed's. There are no significant difference between male and female in RBC,WBC,PCV ,Hb,MCV, MCH and MCHC . The average Hb content was in high level and there was a great variable range,which indicated that more concentrate should be given during pregnancy and lactation period otherwise the nutrition need of ewe can not be met. RBC, Hb, MCV, MCH and MCHC are higher than Henan small-tailed Han Sheep and it indicated that which can carry more oxygen . In concolusion, Henan fat-tailed sheep have a better adaptability on different physiological and movement state, and it also has a better adaptability to cold while poor resistance to hot . Probably,higher osmotic frangibility is another reason of it's poor resistance to hot climate.2. Determination and analysis of blood biochemical index in Henan fat-tailed sheepThe 10 blood biochemical index of 41 (19♀ , 22♂) Henan fat-tailed sheep were determined including plasma total protein, albumen, globulin, plasma total cholesterol, plasma sugar, plasma kalium, plasma sodium, plasma calcium, plasma uric nitrogen and inosine. The values of plasma total protein, albumen, globulin, plasma total cholesterol, plasma sugar,plasma sodium were higher in male than in female. However, the values of plasma sodium, plasma calcium, plasma uric nitrogen and inosine were higher in female. There are no significant difference about all above indexes except cholesterol between male and female (P>0.05), and the plasma total cholesterol was significant difference(P<0.05). The values of plasma total protein, albumen, A/G was higher; plasma globulin, plasma total cholesterol was lower comparing with Henan small-tail Han Sheep and reference value of sheep, but plasma kalium was higher. The results indicate Henan Macro-tail Han Sheep has good disease tolerance; the metabolic rate was higher in female than in male; the thermostability in male was better than in female. The female ought to be pay close attention to supply protein in feed. The higher plasma kalium was one of reason on higher reproductive rate and thermolability of Henan fat-tailed sheep.3. Study on growth and development of Henan fet-tailed sheepThe results showed that the lambing body weight were significantly influenced by lambing number per litter and the effect was caused by inanition. The doubled body weight of lamb were greatly influenced by weaning especially the single lamb was most obviously, twin was secondly and then multiparous lamb was. So, the supplement of concentrate should be started before weaning, and it is also necessary to supplement concentrate to lamb after weaning especially for single lamb and two lamb per litter. It showed great different with extra-uterine growth and development character of other herbivore's, however, it is similar with heterophagous animal or zoophagan. The developmental sequence was chest width, chest depth, tail length, body length, height at withers. With age increasing, the somatic index increased, and the extremital length index and circamference of cannon bone index decreased.
