Studies were conducted on the seasonal abundance and forecasting techniques of the major diseases and insect pests of cucumber and cabbage crops in Shanghai. Following investigations on various control methods, a set of "green" management techniques was put forward, which could help to protect the environment and achieve sustainable control of plant diseases and insect pests. Implementation of the "green" management techniques produced significant benefits.(1) A good knowledge was obtained on the composition and seasonal abundance of the major diseases and insect pests of cucumber and cabbage crops in Shanghai. Through field investigations, a good knowledge was obtained on the seasonal abundance of the downy mildew, the powdery mildew and the melon worm on cucumber, and that of the diamondback moth, the beet armyworm, the small cabbage whitefly and the cluster caterpillar on cabbages in the Shanghai region.(2) Management of insect pests and their natural enemies at the crop system level. The relationships between damage by the diamondback moth and cabbage yield losses were evaluated, and control action thresholds appropriate for the Shanghai region were formulated. A study on integrated pest management in autumn cabbage was conducted and a pests management strategies, which was simple, practical and convenient to farmer , was developed .(3) Improvement of the forecasting techniques for the major diseases and insect pests of cucumber and cabbages in Shanghai. The long-tern data on the forecasting of the powdery mildew and the melon worm on cucumber as well as those of the Spodoptera spp. on cabbage were collated and analyzed. Parameters and models for forecasting were established. The techniques for the forecasting of the major diseases and insect pests were updated and improved.
