The issue of environment and development is what international concerned. It has been accepting widely once the conception of sustainable development and becoming the common instructed thoughts for human beings taking action to survive and develop. Forest is the principal part of land-ecosystem, and the issue of forest is the important topic for discussion all the whiles. At present, most of researchers focus on the Criteria and Indicators at Regional and National levels, which could not be used in measure and assessment on the sustainability of sustainable forest management for the ways of quantifying indicators and assessing is very difficult. So how to evaluate the development of FSM and how to assess the sustainability of FSM need to be resolved rapidly. This study systematically deals with the sustainable forest management of China based on the systematic theory and instructed by sustainable development thoughts; constructs description and assessment indicator system in terms of attributes analysis method and based on the research findings at home and abroad; offers a set of quantified assessment method, which could be practiced, and gains the assessed value of Chinese SFM sustainability from 1973-1998, based on taking full advantage of the data in the five times forest resources investigating of China and others; visualizes the scores of every levels of FSM by some figures and brings up some advice on forest sustainable management in China.Skeleton is below:In Part 1, an overall commentary on the thoughts, conception, background and essential points of sustainable development theory, and summary on forest management theory and status quo of FSM's sustainability research. In Part 2, a brief introduction on what is FSM assessment, the signification and effect of assessment, principles we must follow, a basic frame of FSM assessment in China based on some hypothesis. In Part 3, constructing indicator systems on depicting and evaluating FSM in China and establishing a symbol system of FSM assessment. In Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, measuring the forest sub-ecosystem, economic sub-system, society sub-system, supporting sub-system and scoring on sub-subject and drawing some graphs to reflect the change of indicators and scores of indicators. In Part 8, depicting the polymerizing course of FSM assessment by matrix and obtaining the scores of 62 indicators, 30 sub-subjects, 23 subjects, 9 domains, 4 objects, and scores of FSM sustainability are below: 2.59(weakness), 3.24(average trending weakness), 4.14(average), 4.84(average), 6.17(average trending strong ness) and giving some advice on FSM in China. In Part 9, discussing on the innovations and defects of the study.
