Greenways are ecologically significant corridors, recreational greenways and, or greenways with historical and cultural values. In the city, greenways can link open spaces such as parks, plazas, nature conservation areas, famous scenic areas, historic sites, community parks and so on. In the course of fast urbanization, as a proactive planning theory for nature protection, cultural heritage conservation and green space construction, greenways have been employed into landscape architecture, ecological conservation, urban planning and etc. However, the concept of greenway has not been recognized sufficiently in China. And it is still a new question on how to apply the theory of greenway to construct green spaces, plan eco-city and protect cultural heritage. The concept, history and development trends of greenway were discussed in detail, and the thinking was evoked about the current environments of roads, rivers and cultural heritage corridors and ecological green space system constructions in China. Then, the basic theories for greenway planning were summarized, and relative concepts were compared with greenway such as green corridors, bluebelt, greenbelt, green networks etc., which influence the planning of greenway. The function and construction meaning of greenway were analyzed. As a case study, Nanxu Avenue was tested about great ecological benefit and economic benefit of this greenway. According to the situation of China, greenway was classified to three categories by the author, green way, blue way and purple way, which features road, river and heritage corridor respectively, and the outline of the planning was proposed for each kind of greenways, thereinto purple way was initiated by the author. The detailed planning of greenway was researched as well. Five planning principles were brought forward, which concerned about ecological and environmental protection, cultural and historical conservation, facilities to recreate, availability and continuity. And the scale and dimensions, constitution and configuration, greenway networks and so on were discussed also. At last, the planning of street trees and shrubs were studied according to the plants investigation of thirty three streets of Maanshan City, Anhui Province. The standard of the choice of street trees and shrubs was proposed, and trees were selected for Maanshan City. Studies of the practice of greenway were another major item. Basing on the above research, as three Chinese cases, Nanxu Avenue, which was a site-level greenway, and local-level greenways of Maanshan City and Nanjing City, were discussed in order to sum up how to plan the greenway in China effectively. In site level, Nanxu Avenue was introduced from aspects of bilateral hills, footpath, nodes and so on to explain how to creat greenways. In local level, four main greenways were proposed for Maanshan City according to the natural characteristics of the city. At last, in the case study of Nanjing City, the natural, cultural and historical resources of the city were summarized firstly, then remote sensing technique and ERDAS software were applied to gain the RS image and analyze the current situations of green space distribution of Nanjing, and finally according to above analyses, the conceptual plan of the green way, blue way and purple way for Nanjing were discussed respectively.
