The disease is widely distributed in the world where mosquito vectors existThe current study was conducted by postmortum examination and laboratory diagnosis to a police dog died suddenly. The results showed that dead dog had a heavy parasitism of D. immitis .The police dogs in Xi'an district were then checked to confirm the infection with D. immitis. The methods used for detecting the microfilaria included direct blood smear, serum parasite-condensing and hemolysis. The positive dogs were treatment and the negative dogs were prevented by using ivermectin (0.1 mg/kg) . The results were as follows:1.The infective rate of D.immitis in the police dogs around Xi'an district was higher, reaching 31.2%. The infecting rate of older police dogs was higher than that of younger ones.2.The positive rates were higher by using the serum parasite-condensing and hemolysis methods.3.Ivermectin was effective in the treatment and prevention of canine dirofilariasis.The results drawn from this study will provide a positive role in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of canine dirofilariasis.
