Six adult giant pandas selected from Chendu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base were used for digestive experiments to study the effects of adding enzyme preparation into their diets on digestibility of gross energy and main nutrients.Of all the giant pandas,3 of them were normal in digestive operation and the others themselves were abnormal. The giant pandas were divided into 2 groups at random, with 3 in each group. There were 2 digestive experiments through collecting daily droppings,in which,Exp.l was control experiment and Exp.2 was enzyme supplementation experiment. In Exp.2,compound-enzyme preparation withβ—xylanase and phytase were sprinkled on the daily bamboo of Group1, and cellulase preparation was sprinkled for Group2.The result showed that the digestibilities of gross energy (GE),dry matter (DM) ,crude protein (CP) and crude fiber(CF) decreased for 2 abnormal giant pandas when Group1 was added with enzyme preparation. Of the 2 abnormal giant pandas, one panda's digestibility on crude fat(EE) increased while the other decreased. The digestibilities of another normal panda in Group1 on gross energy(GE) ,dry matter(DM),crude protein (CP),crude fat (EE) and crude fiber(CF) were improved by 13.86%, 13.65%, 13.09%, 14.22%,and 11.72% respectively. In Group2, after enzyme preparation supplementation , energy digestibility was increased for one normal panda and decreased for another one normal panda,,but not significantly. The digestibilities of dry matter(DM) , crude fat(EE) and crude fiber (CF) were improved by 0.4%, 5.24%, 2.60% and 4.79%, 5.79% ,7.0% respectively. The digestibility on crude protein(CP)decreased but not remarkably. The digestibilies of gross energy (GE) ,dry matter(DM), crude protein (CP), crude fat (EE) and crude fiber(CF) were improved by 9.55%, 11.12%, 7.59%, 8.95%, and 5.06% respectively for the sickly pandawith digestive abnormality in this group. Both two experiments of enzyme preparation supplementation indicated that adding enzyme preparation into giant panda's diet can improve nutrient digestibility for over 50% panda individuals. But there is no effectiveness for about 30% individuals. This study also demonstrated that cellulase was superior top—xylan enzyme and phytase.for giant panda. It is concluded that dietary supplementation of enzyme preparation can improve nutrient digestibility for some giant pandas, especially for healthy individuals (P<0.05) .
