Even since the 1980s, the major structure of higher agricultural universities in China has been adjusted several times, thus improving to a certain extent the condition that the development of agricultural majors is not in accordance with social and economic development. However, the result of this kind of adjustment is in conflict with the fast-changing new trend of social and economic development home and broad. How to adjust agricultural majors in the early 21st century is very important to the quality of college students, the ability of graduates to compete in the job market, the educational profits of agricultural majors and the development agricultural colleges and universities. Therefore it is very urgent to further adjust agricultural majors.This study, with agricultural major adjustment as its objective, explores effective measures to adjust agricultural majors in the early 21st century beginning with discussing some theoretical problems concerning major adjustment, analyzing its history and reality comparing the similarities and differences in agricultural major settings in China and America from historical and practical perspectives. It adopts the methods of documentary research, comparison research, paying attention to the combination of the theory and practical analysis, history and reality analysis, qualitative and quantitative analysis.The dissertation is composed of six parts.It is concerned about the demonstration of the background, the research purpose and significance, the research method, the definition of relevant concepts, and the general situation on the research international and internal about majors adjustment in the first part. This part, summing up from the documents research on undergraduate majors, finds that nobody has done the special research on agricultural undergraduate majors, which means much to the whole improvement of undergraduate quality, the employing competition of graduate, the benefit of educating, and the development of agricultural colleges and universities. It also gives some consults and references to carry on relevant study highly effectively.In the second part, it simply explains the relationship of major and subject, the basic classification of majors, the structure of majors, the periods of major, analyzes the influent factors of major adjustment, generalizes the essential measures of undergraduate major settings, base on the study of relevant theoretical problems of major adjustment.In the third part, tracing the history and present of major, the study outlines the historical track of agricultural undergraduate majors, emphasizedly analyses everyagricultural undergraduate major, and forecasts their developing trends.In the fourth part, it compares the similarities and differences between Sino-American agricultural undergraduate majors, and discusses the problem that who will hold the right of majors setting, discussing the problems of major extension and the adjusting directions of majors, hopefully to do some help for future major adjustment.In the fifth part, it puts forward the principles, mechanism, plans and policy advice on how to adjust agricultural undergraduate majors. The mechanism of major adjustment is a mechanism of majors management on colleges and universities self-managing, self-coordinating, self-restricting, under macro-control by educational bureau.The sixth part is a conclusion.
