With the rapid development of "3S", viz. GIS (Geographic Information System), RS (Remote Sensing) and GPS (Global Position System), the application of "3S" in agriculture becomes more mature. GuangZhou Agricultural GIS, or GZA-GIS, is such a "3S" integrated agricultural system that is intended to monitor crops, land and soil information and to periodically acquire and analyze crop growth information, thus is able to offer cultivating and management suggestions to farmers. GZA-GIS integrates technology of "3S", technology of computer science as decision support system, computer network, and agriculture science as agronomy, ecology, plant physiology, and soil science and offers answers to a series of key techniques and problems. With the use of GZA-GIS, the traditional agricultural production system can be improved to a high efficient and automatic stage, char acted by rapid information gathering, in-time diagnosis, and effective field management, which is the basic requirement of precision agriculture for future. This realizes effective crop management control in the whole growing stages. Information driven, scientific management, knowledge-based management and cooperation is the goal of this system.This paper gives the overall system design and database design of GZA-GIS. The whole design process follows the standard of Software Engineering. The design content of the GZA-GIS, developing method and strategy is detailed. GZA-GIS adopts the architected of J2EE, or JAVA 2 Enterprise Edition, and integrates advanced "3S" and spatial database techniques. This extends the system service by computer network and offers its functions through a core database construction. Under the RS, GIS, GPS, MIS and ES integration, it is in fact an application platform and application system of agricultural information system and offers spatially referenced agricultural resource management and decision support tool for agricultural management department and farmers. It also supplies basic information about the development of agriculture for all societies.
