Thermo-photo-sensitive genic male sterility (TPGMS) has many merits in crop heterosis utilizing, for example, it is easy to restore, its hybrid seed is convenient to produce, the cost of its hybrid seed is low, and its male parent for crosses are easy to select. Some TPGMS line in wheat has been cultivated in China, which opens up a new way for two-lines producing hybrids in wheat. In this study, two TPGMS lines, C404S and C412S, were sowed at different dates under natural conditions in Chongqing. And they also were treated under different temperature and light conditions in growth chambers. The fertility alteration and pollen abortion were analyzed. Furthermore, the relationship was investigated between TPGMS and transcription expression of APT1 and APT2 which codes adenine phosphoribosyl transferase (APRT), the key enzyme that converts adenine into adenosine monophosphate (AMP) in a single-step pathway. The results were as follows.1. The field experiment indicated that both C404S and C412S showed a similar style of fertility alteration, i.e. sterility under the conditions of short day length and low temperature, and partial fertility or high fertility under the conditions of high temperature and long day length. For both C404S and C412S, the critical sowing date for steady sterility was about 26th October. Furthermore, for C412S, the critical sowing date for steady high fertility was about 25th November.2. Besides temperature, light intensity also played an important role in fertility expression. Not only high temperature but also high light intensity was needed for C412S to express higher fertility. For another TPGMS line C404S, it had no strict requirement of high light intensity to express higher fertility. For both C404S and C412S, the thermo-sensitive period in fertility expression was relatively long. The most...
