The Tibetan medicine tells that according to season, geographical position and change ofthe universe, the physiological and pathological status of a human body will change; thus, byattaching great importance to observe the operation of the universe and climate change, wecan consider that different seasons can cause different diseases and that different herbs shouldbe picked in different seasons. The astronomy is a study of changes of a large environment ofthe universe, and the medicine is a study of a small environment in a human being. It isnatural that a large environment may influence a small one. Because the Tibetan medicine hasa history over3000years on its theory and practice, moreover we still use its characteristicsystem, therefore we have a great interest in a study on a characteristic system as acombination of the Tibetan medicine and the astronomy.The chronomedicine is a product of the combination of the modern medicine and thechronobiology. The chronobiology is a life science newly developed abroad in1950, and itsmail field is a study of the chronic particularity of biological phenomena. In addition, thechronomedicine also has got its sub-branches such as chronophysiology, chronopathology,chrono-treatment-study, chronopharmacology, chrono-nursing-study, etc. The theoreticalsystem represented by the great book on Tibetan medicine Four treatises of medicine fullyembodies the modern chronomedical study. The astronomy is also an important memberconsisting of the Tibetan culture; from the earliest phenological calendar to the laterchrono-carnating calendar, constitutional calendar, the Tibetan chronology describes not onlythe universe and the operational rules of the nature, but also mentions the magic secret law onthe harmony between man and nature and between man and God. Chrono-carnating sutradivides a time into three parts: external, internal and different chronowheels. The externalchronowheel tells a structure of the universe and calendar knowledge, which is the basis ofthe Tibetan astronomical almanac and astrological theory; the internal chronowheel tells thehuman physiological knowledge, which is the basis to construct the Tibetan medicinetheoretical system; the different chronowheel tells how to combine the internal chronowheeland the external chronowheel and to achieve harmony nature and man, which is the guidingideology of the Tibetan astronomy and calendar. Especially, the internal chronowheel tells thebody’s physiological formation, embryonic development, pathogenesis, medical treatmentwith medicines and human body pulse operation. We can also say that the Kalachakra Tantrais an advanced combination of the astronomical calendar and the medical knowledge, as aresult, it has had the supreme status in the Tibetan Buddhism. In addition, the Tibetanmedicine itself extremely pays attention to the influence of the seasonal solar term to humanhealth as well as the effect of the solar term to the health, and even the time to pick herbmedicines is strictly determined, and there is close relationship between medicine and doctor.This paper studies the importance and the necessity of the relationship between medicineand astronomy in the clinical application through following three aspects: first, comparing themodern chronomedicine with the Tibetan medicine, we find out which aspects the Tibetan medicine has insufficient points in the chronomedical theory and system; second, we analysethe related content of disease prevention, health histology, embryology, pathology, diagnosisand treatment of herbs which are found in the chapters of Four treatises of medicine itself;third, we point out questions and propose their solution through questionnaire survey and visitsurvey on the degree of the actual practical application of the combination of medicine andastronomy.The innovative point of this paper is a as much contribution for the worldwide medicalfield as we can that the Tibetan medicine, ancient science field, must reflect its value andscientific attitude from many viewpoints facing continuous development and innovation ofmedical information. Deficiencies in the researches are a study of the combination betweenastronomy and medicine.
