Dysmenorrhea is a common symptom in Gynecology. It occurs before or during the menstrual period. The symptom can be described as lower abdominal cramping, which may radiates to lumbosacral region of the back. There are variable level of symptom severity, the worst pain can even lead to fainting. Recurrent attacks occurring each month with every menstrual cycles can affect patients’ careers and normal daily activities. In Western medicine, dysmenorrhea can be classified into primary and secondary dysmenorrhea. The focus of this article will be primary dysmenorrhea of which there is no underlying pathology. Usually pain-killers are used as symptomatic treatment without definitive treatment to correct the unknown etiology. Long-term use of oral analgesics has the risk of many side effects. In ancient Chinese medicine dysmenorrhea can be classified into five types: Kidney qi deficiency, Qi and blood deficiency, Damp heat and blood stasis, Cold dampness stagnation type and Qi stagnation and blood stasis type. Herbal medicines can be used as an effective treatment depending on the type of dysmenorrhea.Professor Wang Cuixie, who has many years of experience in Obstetrics and Gynecology, concluded that the basis of dysmenorrhea is the deficiency of Yang in the kidney and spleen combined with blood stasis, and has invented a new regime called “Zi-Ni-Zhi-Tong-Fang”. The targets of this herbal regimen are to restore the Yang, promote the circulation, nourish the liver, and strengthen the stomach and spleen. Using it to treat dysmenorrhea should results in satisfactory outcome.
