Paenoina Suffruticosa Andrews (Cortex Moutan) is an important ornamental andmedicinal plant in China. The root cortex of Paenoina Suffruticosa Andrews is widely used for the treatment of anti-inflammation, immunity adjustment, anti-hypertension, hypoglycemia, anti-thrombus activity and et al. In this paper, the chemical constituents from the root cortex of Paenoina Suffruticosa Andrews were studied, and 25 compounds were obtained. The structures of these compounds were identified by the physico-chemical evidences and NMR spectroscopic data, and they are p-hydroxylbenzoylpaeonidanin (1), benzoyloxypaeonidanin (2),4-O-methyl-moudanpioside-C (3),4-O-methyl-benzoyloxypaeoniflorin (4), paeoniflorin (5), 4-O-methyl-paeoniflorin (6), benzoylpaeoniflorin (7), galloylpaeoniflorin (8), moudanpioside-C (9), benzoyloxy-paeoniflorin (10), mudanpioside-H (11), mudanpioside-J (12), paeonidanin(13), paeonol (14), (-)-catechin (15), (-)-3-O-catechin gallate (16), gallic acid (17), methyl gallate (18), progallin A (19), fumaric acid (20), mono-ethyl fumarate (21), hederagenin (22), quercetin (23), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (24),β-daucosterol (25)。Among them,1-4 are new compounds,15-16 and 21 were isolated from Paenoina genus for the first time.18 and 19 were isolated from Paenoina Suffruticosa Andr. for the first time.
