Paeonia suffruticosa Andr.is known as China?s national flower, it is the botany of Paeonia. The penoy flower is colorful, magnificence, big and fragrant, so lovedby the people, and the flower has a high ornamental value. Peony flower containing active ingredients such as antioxidant anthocyanins, also contains nutrients such as proteins, polysaccharides, amino acids, minerals and so on, so it is widely used in pharmaceuticals, health products, food and cosmetics industries. In this paper, the study of the chemical composition in peony flower at home and abroad were sorted out, and found that the studies on the chemical constituents of the peony flowers and the determination of the content of the peony flowers are mainly focused on the volatile components, anthocyanins and other nutrients.However, there were few reports on the systematic study of the chemical composition in peony flower, and the determination of peony flowers has some limitations. Therefore, it is necessary to systematically study the constituents of peony flower, and to establish a HPLC method to evaluate different varirties of peony flowers, to provide reference for the high value utilization and quality evaluation of penoy flowers. The main conclusions in this paper are as follows:1. The research developments on the peony at home and abroad were reviewed, mainly about the chemical composition in peony flowers, the application of peony flowers in food, medicine and cosmetics, the quality of peony flower; the chemical constituents of the peony flowers were explained.2. The peony flower extract was obtained by 70% ethanol percolation method, seven monoterpene glycosides compounds and two phenolic compounds were isolated by silica gel column chromatography, sephadex LH-20 chromatography, ODS column chromatography and preparative high performance liquid chromatography and then the structures of the isolated compounds were identified by MS, 1HNMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy, respectively as pyridylpaeoniflorin(1), paeodanin B(2), lactiflorin(3), acetylpaeoniflorin(4), paeoniflorin(5), benzoyl paeoniflorin(6), oxypaeoniflorin(7), gallic acid(8), methyl gallate(9).3. The peony flower extract was obtained by 70% ethanol percolation method, nine flavonoids were isolated by polyamide chromatography, silica gel column chromatography, sephadex LH-20 chromatography, ODS column chromatography and preparative high performance liquid chromatography and then the structures of the isolated compounds were identified by MS, 1HNMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy, respectively as chrysoeriol-7-O-?-D-glucopyranoside(10), kaempferol-7-O--?-D-glucopyranoside(11), dihydrokaempferol-7-O-?--D-glucopyranoside(12), luteolin-7-O-?-D-glucopyranoside(13), apigenin-7--O-?-D-neospheroside(14), apigenin-7-O-?-D-glucopyranoside(15), kaempferol-3-O-?-D-glucopyranoside(16), apigenin(17), kaempferol(18)4. The standard curve and regression equation of gallic acid, oxypaeoniflorin, methyl gallate, dihydrokaempferol-7-O-?-D-glucopyranoside, paeoniflorin, apigenin-7-O-?-D-neospheroside, astragalin, apigenin-7-O-?-D--glucopyranoside were draw and obtained.According to the regression equation, the content of eight chemical constituents in six kinds of peony flowers, included“rou fu rong”,”dan feng bai”, “ba qian dai chun”, “zi er qiao”, “zhi hong”, “yu mian tao hua” were calculated, laws were summarized; the mothod of HPLC to determination the content of eight kinds of chemical constituents in six kinds of penoy flowers was established, which provided a reference for the quality control of peony flower.
