The whole plant of Juncus setchuensis Buchen. ex Diels (Ye-Deng-Xin-Cao in Chinese ).was prescribed as a medicinal herb in tradional Chinese medicinal books. It is a perennia 1 herbaceous distributed mainly in southern China and often found in marshes, swamps and other poorly drained sites, this dissertation describes the investigation of chemical compoun ds from the EtOAc extracts of J. setchuensis.Utilizing the liquid extraction, all kinds of column chromatography (sica gel, sephadexL H-20, MCI and preperation HPLC), as well as the repeated recrystallization, a total of 21 c ompounds were isolated from the EtOAc extracts of the Juncus setchuensis. Their structures were finally identified by the spectroscopic methods (IR, HR-ESI-MS, LR-ESI-MS,1H-NM R,13C-NMR, HMBC, HSQC and ROESY spetra) as 2-hydroxy-1,7-dimethyl-6-vinyl-9,10-dih ydrophenethrene (1),2,6-dihydroxy-1-methyl-7-carboxyl-8-vinyl-9,10-dihydrophenethrene (2),2, 6-dihydroxy-1,7-dimethyl-8-vinyl-9,10-dihydrophenethrene (3),2,8a-dihydroxy-1,7-dimethyl-6-o xo-8-vinyl-9,10-dihydrophenethrene (4),2-hydroxy-1,7-dimethyl-6-vinyl-phenethrene (5),2,6-di hydroxy-1,7-dimethyl-8-vinyl-phenethrene (6),2,6-dihydroxy-1-methyl-12-lactone-phenethrene ( 7),2,8-dihydroxy-1,6-dimethyl-5-vinyl-9,10-dihydrophenethrene (8), effusol (9), dehydroeffusol (10), lutelin (11), chrisoeriol (12), ermanin (13), genistein (14),2’-acctamido-3’-phenyl prop yl 2-benzamido-3-phenylpropionate (15), 1-O-p-coumaroyl-3-O-feruloylglycerol (16),2-octendi oic acid,3-hydroxy-8-methyl-l-nony leater (17), ethyl caffeoate (18), cyloartenon (19),β-sitos terol (20), graminone A (21).Compounds 1-7 were new components:juncuenin A-D (1-4) and dehydrojucuenin E-G (5-7), compounds 15 and 20 were isolated from the Juncus genus for the first time. This finding was consistent with the previous reports about chemical constituents from other Juncus plants. However, the structures of 7 new compounds featured a vinyl functiona lity at C-6 or C-8, which was differentto those compounds reported of which the vinyl gro up was only observed at C-5. This could be supplied as evidence for the chemotaxonomy of the Juncus genus.
