Since the State Forestry Administration put forward "Digital Forestry" as an important forestry information project, all kinds of related research has been carried out step by step. There are too many forestry data types on "Digital Forestry", which include spatial data, such as various types of multi-spectral, multi-temporal, high-resolution remote sensing satellite images, aerial images, digital maps of various scales; and non-spatial data, such as survey data of forest resources, economic data and social data.The storage and transmission of the massive data have become the bottleneck of the development of forestry information. Based on the existing technology level, making full use of resources, to implement fully forestry information projects, it is necessary to solve the storage and transmission problems of massive data.The storage and transmission of forestry massive data are two linked closely aspects. There are two ways to resolve the bottleneck of storage and transmission problems at home and abord.On one hand, we can improve the storage capacity of storage devices and the transmission speed of transmission equipment by technological innovation, and the cost will increase; on the other hand, we can proceed from the massive data by organizing data reasonably, building a good transmission network, and choosing a suitable data compression algorithm to reduce the data for storage and transmission. The latter is selected to study the massive forestry data storage and transmission problems in this paper.In this paper, to resolve the massive data storage and transmission problems,after investigating the status of forestry information in Guangzhou,using data storage technology, network transmission technology, 3S technology and data compression methods,the major work are as follows: (1)Aanalyzing comprehensively the status of forestry information project in Guangzhou, pointing out the questions of the massive data storage and transmission bottlenecks in the process of forestry information construction;(2)Considering the status of forestry information project in Guangzhou,studying the common methods used in data storage:disk storage, optical storage, DAS technology, NAS technology, SAN and data grid technology, etc.which are used in forestry information project;(3)According to the characteristics of forestry,analyzing the organization form of massive data.And by comparing the advantages and disadvantages of various storage technologies,designing the program of massive data storage in forestry;(4)Analyzing the common methods of data transmission such as wireless transmission, cable transmission which used in forestry information.And according to the characteristic that the data comes from many sources,designing a transmission network program of forestry information in Guangzhou.(5)According to the characteristics of forestry data, improving the LZW compression algorithm basede on the original algorithm. It is proved that the algorithm is effective.With the forestry information carrying out widely,storage and network technology continuing to progress,the massive data storage and transmission methods need to continuously improve.In the process of forestry information in Guangzhou,it will be long-term task to combination the massive data storage and transmission methods with specific applications.
