Bamboo is the main food source of giant panda(Ailuiopodidae melanoleuca), which is one of the important species which are in severe danger all over the world. The research on staple food bamboo of the giant panda has important theoretical and practical significance. The study proceeded in Anzihe Nature Reserve in Qionglai mountains by setting up herbivory, clipped and control plots respectively for three staple food bamboos species of giant panda, collected the relevant growth and recruitment data in every plot type for each bamboo species, further to analyze the regeneration data and index based on lots of field work. Meanwhile, according to the basic data from the field survey, the standard bamboo strains were determined, then the contents of tannin and iron, manganese, copper, zinc, calcium and magnesium elements of different bamboo species and parts in different age were determined and analyzed, aiming to understand the update differences between different bamboo species and find the optimal parts and bamboo species fed by giant panda; and to ascertain the important element factors influencing giant panda feeding tendency.Main conclusions are as following:(1) Bashania fangina is the prefering bamboo species for giant panda in Qionglai mountains, the giant pandas tend to feed the central stem and the upper stem; (2) Compared three kinds of staple food bamboos, Phyllostachys bissetii is needed to promote the recruitment rate by artificial measures; (3) The difference between regeneration of shoots influenced by clipping method and wild giant panda herbivory is not significant, therefore the method of simulating the wild giant panda feeding environment using artificial clipping means is feasible in future research work; (4) The giant pandas tend to feed bamboo species and parts which contain lower tannin content and higher nitrogen content; (5) The results showed negative correlation between total nitrogen content and zinc content of bamboo species and the left height of bamboos after fed. In feeding process, the giant pandas make the tendency that the height and position of feeding bamboos decided by according to the content of nitrogen and zinc elements.
