In order to learn Serological and genetype situation of sheep hepatitis E virus infection in Xinjiang, we start this experiment on HEV. 826 sheep sera from 4 species raised at 6 regions of Xingjiang (348 from Southern Xinjiang, 478 from Northern Xinjiang) were tested by DS-ELISA for the presence of anti-HEV IgG, and the prevalence differences were analysed based on location(South and North Xinjiang),age range(≤1 year,2-3years, ≥3years) and species of sheep by X~2 test. The result showed the overall prevalence of anti-HEV IgG was 19.13%(158/826),but 21.26 % (74/348) for the South Xinjiang, and significantly higher(P<0. 05) than that of the North 17.58%(84/478). The prevalence rate of Xinjiang native Karakuer Sheep(23.94% (79/330)) was significantly higher (P<0.05) than that of the introduced Little tailed Han Sheep(17.33% (65/375)). No significant prevalence differences (P>0.05)were found between the analysed age ranges. 50 Xinjiang native Karakuer Sheep sera from Southern Xinjiang and 70 Little tailed Han Sheep sera from 2 regions of Northern Xinjiang were tested by reverse transcription nested polymerase chain reaction(RT-nPCR),Two sets of primers were designed and synthesized based on several conserved regions of HEV nucleotide sequences, for detection of sheep hepatitis E virus. The result showed 0 of 120 sheep sera were positive for HEV RNA.
