The Variation Of PPO Activity In Wheat Varieties And The Selection Of Low PPO Activity Of Wheat Germplasms

To understand the variations of wheat PPO activities in China, and to select varieties with steady and low PPO activities, 177 and 181 wheat varities were planted in Anhui Agricultural University Farm in the years of 03～04 and 04～05, respectively, and the PPO activities were tested using DOPA as substrate in spectrophotometer. The rerults showed as follows:1,The span of distributing of PPO activity of 177 cultivars was wide in 03～04, pink value was inclined to low PPO activity. PPO activity mainly distributed in 191.2～371.2AU/min/g. There was a pink value in lower PPO activity, where there was more varities of low PPO activity. However, the span of distributing of PPO activity of 181 cultivars was gently in 04～05, the activity intently distributed in 131.2～371.2AU/min/g.2,The analysis of the same varieties for two years had showed that the PPO activity were high significantly correlated and the coefficient was 0.84. This suggested that genotypes were main factors for PPO activity.3,The PPO activity of some leading wheat cultivars planted widely in China was very different. Most of them, such as Yumai34, Wen8, Neixiang188 and Huaimai20, had higher PPO activity. Their value were above 270.00AU/min/g, but Ningmai 9 and Yanyou361 had lower value in two years.4,The experiments had delected some lower PPO varieties, such as Yu02321, China Spring, Xinxiang9178, Ningmai9, 02P157, 02Y151, 34-thl95, Ning0076, and Federation, the PPO activity was lower than 150.00AU/min/g in two years. The selection and utilization of these wheat germplasms with low PPO activity would bebeneficial to wheat quality improvement.5,The variation of PPO activity was related to grain colour. Generally, the most of high PPO activity was red wheats.
