As far as wide arid and semiarid areas in north China is concerned, water shortage is a key factor to restrict developing social economy and building ecological environment. As a result,when we afforest in these areas, it becomes very important for sustainable development of forestry to develop water-saving and to increase water utilization efficiency. The application of Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP) is an important technology to hold water and fight drought. Our experiment is carried out in the drought and rainless hilly area in Qingshui River Forestry Centre in Inner-Mongolia. In this experiment, afforestation with plants, such as Robinia pseudoacacia and Caragana korshinskii, which is treated with water absorbents different in speciel and concentration, was studied to find the effect of the super absorbents to the soil physicochemical property and forest growth. By systematically analyzing the working mechanism of water absorbents, and demonstrating the actual effect of water absorbents application, we can decide the suitable type and consistency of SAP, and provide the scientific foundation for the use of it for the afforestation in the dry sand zone in West China.The results were as following: Statistics showed that the application of SAP can improve the field moisture capacity and effective moisture content by 33.42% at most, can reduce soil weight by volume be by 23.58%, can strengthen soil water holding capacity, can prolong the time for plants supply, can increase the drought resistance ability of the plant. In different treatments, the Xingren effect of keep self-restraint soil moisture is better than Sanyang. The proportion of Xingren2 is better than Xingren1,and there is no significant effectiveness in Sanyang1 and Sanyang2. After the application of SAP, the soil moisture was increased by 11.28%~42.22% and the soil moisture enhanced by 6.33%~11.53% in Spring .The super water absorbent can infection the water energy condition,in low suction areas, under the same water suction, the soil moisture is increased follow the accretion, then soil water holding capacity strengthen; Under the same soil moisture, the water energy condition is depressed with the increased of proportion, then the water validity is reduced. So after the application of SAP can increase the release of the effective moisture content in low suction areas.The application of SAP can manifold the soil microbe number and the soil enzyme content. The treatment which advanced the most is Sangyang2. The root length, root surface area and root volume of Robinia pseudoacacia and Caragana korshinskii were increased than CK after the application of SAP, the significant variation was observed.
