It is very difficult to control anesthetic levels when narcotics are used for ruminants. The common problems which are caused by anesthesia are excessive anesthesia, rumen tympany, regurgitant of rumen substance and delayed revival. No medicine can overcome the above problems in ruminant anesthesia nowadays. Xylazine is a common narcotic with the characteristics of low toxicity, short inducement and no cumulation effect. It can anethetize ruminants with very low dosage, but result in the suppression of heart rate and respiration rate. Acupuncture anesthesia (AA) has been used and studied by Chinese medical workers for over 40 years. Veterinary workers began to practice electro-acupuncture and did research on its mechanism in the late 1970's. Acupuncture anesthesia research group in Huazhong Agricultural University chose "baihui santai" and "ergen sanyangluo" points with 36Hz and 1.0 V -1.5K to anesthetize catties and goats, and obtained perfect antalgic effect. But acupuncture anesthesia has its shortcomings, such as incomplete analgesia, muscular tension and reactions to visceral pulling. In order to overcome this shortcomings, acupuncture balanced anesthesia method appeared. Over-20-years clinical practice and mechanism research work by Chinese medical workers indicate that acupuncture balanced anesthesia remains the beneficial points , such as less affecting physiology, reducing immunity suppression by anesthesia and operation, and overcoming the problems of incomplete analgesia, muscular tension and reactions to visceral pulling. However, researches on acupuncture balanced anesthesia and its application in ruminant anesthesia have not been reported yet. In order to find an optimal anesthesia method which can be better applied for ruminants, the effectiveness of electro-acupuncture combined with xylazine on anesthesia and its effect on immune function in goats were studied.1 Effectiveness of electro-acupuncture combined with xylazine on anesthesia of goatsForty-eight hybrid goats were randomly divided into eight groups, including electro-acupuncture, xylazine 0.1mg/kg, xylazine 0.2mg/kg, xylazine 0.4mg/kg, EA...
