The variances of lycopene contents in tomato varieties with the fruit development, relationship between lycopene contents and agronomic traits as well as fruit traits and the combining ability and genetic parameters of lycopene in tomatos were studied by means of correlation and path analysis and the first method of Griffing's dialles cross, respectively. The main results are as follows :1. Variances of lycopene contents in tomato varieties with fruit developmentLycopene contents increased with the development of fruits, and there were significant differences of lycopene contents between the half-ripe period and full-ripe period. Dvelopment period from half-ripe to full-ripe is the key stage for lycopene synthesis. Comparison among species with different fruit color, lycopene content in red color fruit was the highest ,that of yellow fruit was the lowest and relative stable in the whole development periods. Comparison among cherry tomato and common tomato varieties with same fruit color, lycopene content of cherry tomoto is higher than that of common tomato.2.Relationship between lycopene contents in fruit and agronomic traitsCorrelation and path analysis of 16 agronomic traits with lycopene content were studied. Correlation analysis showed that the agronomic traits were correlated with lycopene content ,and the relationships were complicated among agronomic traits. Path analysis indicated that the direction and size of direct path coefficients are difference from their genetic correlation coefficients. Integrated view is that traits such as high content of soluable solid matter, short-internode and small fruit weight are benefit for selection materials with higher lycopene content.3. Analysis of combining ability and genetic parameters of lycopene in tomatoThe genetic combining ablity was among -0.608~0.734,and the parents 2 and 4 had the higher g. c. a,the special combining ablity ranged in -0.302~1.208,the S24 had the best s.c.a.. Comprehensive the performance of g. c. a, s.c.a., the lycopene contents of parents and hybrid combinations revealed that the parents 2 and 4 were usable. The broad sense hereditablity of lycopene in tomato was 57.35%,the narrow gene hereditablity was 46.36%,and due to additive-dominant model.
