Ginkgo biloba L., named as Baigo tree, is a unique species with multifunction in officinal, health-care, edible food, greening & ornamental, and timber as a 2nd class protected plant in China. The seedling production of Ginkgo biloba was developed dramatically along with the improvement of people's living-condition in recent years. Therefore, the superior cultivars' selection and establishing corresponding evaluation system for greening & ornamental Ginkgo biloba have become as an emergent problem for foresters. The integrated evaluation of greening & ornamental characteristics for Ginkgo biloba in Shaanxi province was done on the major cultivars in local. The results showed as follows:(1) Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to establish the integrated evaluation system for Ginkgo biloba cultivars on greening & ornamental characteristics. The system was subdivided into target level, criterion level and index level. The target level (T) refers to the integrated assessment of greening & ornamental characteristics for Ginkgo biloba. The criterion level (Ai) was founded on tree-shape (A1), branch-shape (A2), leaf-form (A3), leaf color (A4) and the tree specificity (A5). The index level (Bi) refers to the crown shape (B1), stem shape (B2), tree high (B3), divaricated angle (B4), shoots growing (B5), the index of leaf shape (B6), petiole length (B7), leaf-area (B8), leaf shape (B9), leaf-color (B10), leaf-shine (B11), the obvious plant specificity (B12), and the indistinct plant specificity (B13). The sort orders on factor weights for the criterion level and index level are A4>A5>A1>A2>A3 and B10>B12>B4>B1>B11>B2>B9>B5>B3>B6>B13>B7>B8 correspondingly. The leaf color (A4) with largest weight in the criterion level is an most important and basic property in greening & ornamental evaluation for Ginkgo biloba cultivars, and followed by tree specificity (A5) which affect directly on the greening & ornamental value of Ginkgo biloba. The leaf form (A3) plays a smallest role in the ornamental assessment. On the index level, leaf color (B10) with a largest weight in the index level is a major criterion affecting the greening & ornamental evaluation for Ginkgo biloba cultivars, however, petiole length (B7) and the leaf shape index (B6) are two factors with relative small influence on the greening & ornamental evaluation.(2) 36 major cultivars were classified into 6 groups according to the greening & ornamental characteristics by Q cluster analysis. The evaluation scores for the 1st group (No.33, No.8), 2nd group (No.29, No.21, No.19, No.13, No.24, No.23, No.16, No.7) and 4th group (No.4) are relatively higher than groups' mean value on the greening & ornamental basis, the superior cultivars could be selected from those 3 groups for ornamental using. Meanwhile, the No.33 (Shanyin-10) and No.13 (Taishan-3) could also be planted as cultivars for leaf and timber using.(3)The evaluation scores on greening & ornamental basis for Ginkgo biloba cultivars in Shaanxi province could be arranged as highest(â… ), higher(â…¡), high(â…¢), normal(â…£), low (â…¤) and lower (â…¥) for 6 grades. The corresponding sort order for 36 major cultivars is Shanyin-10>Shanyin-15>Shanyin-5>Taishan-3>C94-16>C94-68>Shanyin-2>Maling-3>Shanyin-6>Jinzhui-2>Shanyin-3>Shanyin-13>C96-17>C94-63>Shanyin-25>Shanyin-26>Shanyin-11>Shanyin-16>Shanyin-17>C94-08>C94-09 > Shanyin-7 > C95-07 > C94-56 > C95-09 > C95-08 > Shanyin-12 > Shanyin-19 > C95-04 >C95-19>Shanyin-4>C95-13>C94-21>Shanyin-23>Shanyin-9>Shanyin-14, of which Shanyin-10, Taishan-3, Shanyin-5, C94-68, Shanyin-15, and C95-07 could be selected as the superior cultivars for greening & ornamental use in Shaanxi Province.
