The Origin Of Traditional Chrysanthemum Cultivation And The Culture Development In China

The cultivation history of chrysanthemum is very long in China. In the processes of cultivating, appreciating, evaluating, praising, and painting of the chrysanthemum, it has become involved in the content of life and the culture. So some kinds of cultural phenomena related to chrysanthemum have been formed and a culture system of chrysanthemum has been set up. The chrysanthemum culture has a very important position and value in the traditional culture of China. Therefore, comprehensive and systematical research of the traditional chrysanthemum culture of China would be very significant and meaningful.The main research method of this thesis was firstly to collect the historic information as much as possible, and then to compare the result of the former research and pick the the useful material out and leave the other aside. Secondly, according to the main three aspects as the tangible, behavioral and spiritual culture, a large quantity of materials should be classified systematically. In the process of classification, the theoretical relationship among the three aspects would be thoroughly analyzed. The extensive theoretical system would be induced and refined. New viewpoint would be posed and a creative theory would be raised, meanwhile, the perspective obtained would be examined in the background of traditional culture of China to insure that the posed theory would be accurate.The origin and development of chrysanthemum were firstly studied under the background of Chinese history and culture. And then three aspects as tangible form, behavioral pattern and spiritual connotation were systematically explained. From the basis of tangible form of chrysanthemum culture, the evolution of chrysanthemum cultivated varieties of China, the utility value of chrysanthemum and the feature of chrysanthemum figure design on the crafts were systematically studied. It has been explained that the feature and diversity of the chrysanthemum cultivated varieties was the material foundation and carrier of the chrysanthemum spiritual culture. In the study of behavioral pattern of chrysanthemum culture, it showed that the behavioral pattern was first appeared as the sign of season. The custom of the Double Nine Festival custom related to chrysanthemum was the main content of behavioral pattern of chrysanthemum culture. Through the research of development of traditional chrysanthemum exhibition, it could be recognized that the typical chrysanthemum specialized exhibition was characterized with multiple value and function of society and culture. As spiritual connotation was the core of the chrysanthemum culture, the thesis widely and systematically collected a great deal of poems, painting and literature art works with the subject of chrysanthemum. In the third part of thesis, the multi-symbolic meanings of chrysanthemum in the traditional culture of China were refined. When the chrysanthemum was spread to other counties, such as Japan and Korea, the special chrysanthemum culture of China also influenced the neighbor counties, while the western counties also formed different mode of their chrysanthemum culture.The chrysanthemum culture of China was an organic system. The tangible culture was the form fused with the tangible materials and the activities of human psychology and spirit. The entire chrysanthemum cultivated varieties, forms and figures that were continuously developing under the push of intangible power as traditional aesthetic perspectives, philosophy, and the pattern of thinking were shown as the touchable materials that revealed the connotation of ideology and culture. The behavioral pattern of chrysanthemum culture worked as intermediary connection between the tangible and spiritual culture. It expressed and exhibited the meaning of spiritual culture through some activities with the subject of chrysanthemum on the basis of tangible material of chrysanthemum. The connotation of chrysanthemum spiritual culture was fully expressed in many types of culture-form carders such as poems, paintings, novels, and customs, and then different spiritual connotations were formed.From ancient time China had been a county flourished in flori-culture, and it was inherited and succeeded from Chinese traditional culture. The chrysanthemum culture had great depth of connotation and so long history. The thesis select three main aspects to discuss the chrysanthemum culture. It hoped for more recognition of the importance of chrysanthemum in the culture of China, and more passion stimulated from the all the people to the chrysanthemum career. It aimed to carry forward our national culture to promote the career of chrysanthemum floriculture and to enable chrysanthemum make more contribution to the health of human being and the development of society.
