In order to search condign planting FD alfalfa varieties in transitional areas of farming and pasturing in north, analyzed and compared with productive performance including growing periods,survival rate in winter,plant height,fresh/dry ratio,regrowth character,photosynthetic character,total yield and nutritive content etc of eight different FD alfalfa varieties coming from different countries. The result showed: (1) Varieties between FD2-4 could survive in winter. (2) The return green time of semi-dormancy was earlier than dormancy and non-dormancy, native cultivar was the latest of all. (3) All foreign alfalfa varieties grew fast and were taller than native cultivar. (4) Different varieties had significant difference on the wideness of crown. (5)Different varieties had significant difference on total yield and different harvest yield. Among all the alfalfa varieties, native cultivar,FD2-3 were lower, the next was FD4,FD6-7, and FD8-9 was the highest. (6) With the change of development stages, and the fresh/dry ratio was following dropping;Coarse-fibred content was rising, and coarse-protein content was dropping. Every alfalfa varieties''coarse-protein content was above 18% in the blooming stage. So, all the alfalfa varieties were used as high quality protein feed. (7) Different varieties had significant difference on photosynthetic characteristics. Pn of native cultivar was the highest of all foreign alfalfa varieties (except WL-232HQ), dormancy varieties was higher than semi-dormancy and non-dormancy. WUE of Aohan alfalfa was the highest in all alfalfa varieties. Evaluated various alfalfa varieties synthetically, character of Algonquin was the same as Aohan, the next was WL-232HQ,WL-323,Emperor,WL-414,Hunterriver. Considering survival in winter and using effectively local radiant energy of sun, Algonquin,WL-232HQ,WL-323,Emperor could adapt to local environment and plant. So, in local natural condition dormancy and semi-dormancy varieties should be introduced and spreaded. Because Emperor manifested preferably not only total yield but also quality,it should been preferred to plant widely in local good planting environment;in local relatively poor planting environment, Algonquin,WL-232HQ,WL-323 could be selected and planted.
