The effects of adding sodium humate on rumen and whole tract digestion and metabolism of sheep were studied in this paper.ExpermentⅠFour male China Merino sheep (Xinjiang type), fitted with permanent fistula in the rumen and duodenum, were used to study the effects of adding sodium humate on rumen digestion and metabolism. Sheep were assigned to four dietary treatments (0, 2, 4, 6 g·sheep-1·d-1) in a 4×4 Latin square design. The results showed that the rumen pH value of groups added 4 g.d-1.sheep-1 and 6 g.d-1.sheep-1 were lower 0.08 and 0.07 pH unit than that of the control respectively (P<0.05). The ammonia-nitrogen concentrations of rumen liquid of 2 g.d-1.sheep-1group, 4 g.d-1.sheep-1 group and 6 g.d-1.sheep-1 group were lower 13.75%, 18.09% and 16.03% than that of control group respectively (P<0.01) after intaking three hours. Addition of sodium humate significantly increased the concentrations of acetic acid and propionic acid in rumen fluid after intaking three hours. The disappearance and disappearance rate of DM and OM in the former stomach of the group added 4 g.d-1.sheep-1 were significantly increased (P<0.05). The disappearance of DM in the former stomach of the group added 6 g.d-1.sheep-1 was significantly increased (P<0.05). As increased the amount of adding sodium humate, the quantity of microbial protein reached the intestine had trend to inrease(P>0.05).ExpermentⅡFour male China Merino sheep (Xinjiang type), were used to study the effects of adding sodium humate on digestion and metabolism. Sheep were assigned to four dietary treatments (0, 2, 4, 6 g.d-1.sheep-1) in a 4×4 Latin square design. The results showed that the amounts of digestiable DM and OM were increased by 5.59%,14.45%,11.10% ( P<0.05) and 5.59%, 15.20%(P<0.05), 10.13%, respectively when 2, 4, 6 g.d-1.sheep-1 were added. The amounts of digestiable OM of the group of adding sodium humate 4g.d-1.sheep-1.Significant over the group of adding sodium humate 2g.d-1.sheep-1 and 6g.d-1.sheep-1(P<0.05). The amounts of digestiable semi-cellulose of 2 g.d-1.sheep-1group, 4 g.d-1.sheep-1 group and 6 g.d-1.sheep-1 group increased by 9.82%,68.20%(P<0.01)and 27.80%(P<0.01)compared with the control group. Addition of sodium humate did not significantly affect the apparent digestibility of DM, OM, CP, Ca, P and the metabolism of N, Ca, P by sheep. The present study showed that adding sodium humate could increase the DM intake, the amount of the digestible DM, OM and semi-cellulose, but had no significant effects on metabolism of N, Ca and P. Collectively, the sodium humate addition of 4-6 g.d-1.sheep-1 was suitable for regulation of digestion and metabolism of sheep.
