The purpose of this study is to investigate echocardiographic parameters and indices in the normal German shepherd dog and expected to be helpful for studies on small animal cardiology, 21 normal dogs were examined by ultrasonography.Left ventricular internal dimension at the end-diastole (LVIDd),left ventricular internal dimension at the endsystole (LVIDs),septal thickness at the end-diastole(STd),septal thickness at the end-systole(STs),left ventricular wall thickness at the end-diastole(LVWTd),left ventricular wall thickness at the end-systole(LVWTs),the right ventricular internal dimension at end-diastole(RVIDd),aorta at the end-diastole(AOD),left atrium at the end-systole(LA),left ventricular fractional shortening(FS) were measured. The correlations between body weight, gender and measurements of echocardiography were discussed. All measurements except FS have a significant correlation between the body weight. LVIDd,LVIDs,LVWTd,LVWTs and RVIDd have a significant correlation between the gender(p<0.05), FS,AOD,STd and STs was no significant correlation between the gender(p>0.05).Echocardiography can show the heart clearly and evaluate its function, it's the most valuable exam means and will play an important role on the small animal cardiology.
