Picea balfouriana(PB) is one of the most important indigenous tree species used for the production of pulp wood and timber.It is a main forest type in Sichuan province,and it is the especially forest plants in Qingzang plateau eastern region fall.Most of natural stands were felled,some gene resources had been lost.In order to conserve the remainders scientifically and utilize rationally,it was necessary to make clear genetic diversity and population differentiation within the species.This study could provide the theoretical references for the gene resources conservation and genetic improvement in this species.Based on field investigations and analysis of the natural distribution of PB,30 individuals of 12 populations were confirmed.This study was conducted by morphological methods to determine genetic variation of natural populations and fred out the relation between genetic variation of natural populations and different distribution areas in PB,and provided the theoretical references for the gene resources conservation and genetic improvement.The main research results were as follows:(1)The results of research showed that there was significantly difference in morphological characters among populations and among individuals within population.In different individuals within populations,the CV of 4 phenotypic traits(in cone,needle,seed scale,and seed wing) were 12.56%,22.16%,12.61%and 16.53%,respectively,the traits stability of cone and seed scale was higher than that of other morphological traits.(2)The VST of cone,needle,seed scale,and seed wing from 11.27%to 62.08%.The mean phenotypic differentiation coefficient VST of populations was 36.53%.It al so showed that the variation among populations(36.53%) was greatly smaller than that within populations(63.47%).The order of CV within populations was as follows:ShiQu population(20.00%)>BaiYu population(17.33%)>SeDa population(16.06%)>XiangCheng population(16.03%)>LuHe population(16.00%)>JiuLong population(15.72%)>BaTang population(15.57%)>DaoFu population(15.41%)>XinLong population(15.07%)>LiTang population(14.87%)>YaJiang population(14.85%)>KangDing population(14.61%).(3)The repeatability of cone,needle,seed scale and seed wing was 0.5318,0.4091,0.4593 and 0.3973,respectively,the order of morphological repeatability was BaTang>JiuLong>LuHe>XiangCheng>YaJiang>DaoFu>ShiQu>SeDa>LiTang>XinLong>BaiYu>KangDing.(4)The cone length,cone width,needle length and seed scale length were the most important phenotypic traits which were easy to measure in PB.The traits variation of natural populations within species affected mainly by longitude(such as cone and needle) and latitude(such as seed scale and seed wing) in spatial distribution.(5)The 12 populations of PB investigated could be divided into 3 groups according to the UPGMA cluster analysis.In summary,the science basis for genetic resources conservation and utilization of PB had been provided,and also grow a research to provide to draw lessons from picea Dietr.in other regions of western Sichuan province.
