The purpose of livestock production system based on pasture is not only to produce more livestock products, but also achieve sustainability of the grassland development. This process includes a bunch of issues, such as to correspond the production and the utilization. At this time, there are lots of problems in the system, and so much plain has been disturbed. To make the suitable grazing strategies such as establishing the optimal stocking rate, which can make the maximum productivity and achieve the sustainability, are the main optimization questions of the livestock production system based on pasture. The main purpose of this research is to find better options for farm improvement and grassland sustainable development by modeling and experiment. Field survey data of typical farm and experiment data were used to establish Feed balance model(FBM) and Livestock production system optimizing model(LPSOM). The experiment of Gansu fine wool sheep pen feed in warm sheds during cold seasons (Experiment Group) production performance compare with grazed all year (Control Group) has been implemented. The experiment results and model results have been used to testify each other. Finally, it give suggestions for improving the profitability and sustainability at Kangle town Sunan County.(1)The feed is unbalance from October to the following May,It is still unbalance if only feed the sheep 0.1kg hay during winter and Spring, especially in later pregnancy and lactation time at Kangle town Sunan county. (2)The experiment results show that the grazed all year adult ewes, maiden ewes and lamb body weight lost during experiment time from December to the following May. The results is coincide with FBM results . (3) For the lambing time, the results of the FBM and the LPSOM is that lambing in June and July is the best for feed balance during the whole year, but the feasibility need to test by experiment. The feed balance of lambing in April and May is better than lambing in January and February. (4) The result of LPSOM is that the ecological optimal stocking rate is 0.83 breeding ewes/ha and the economical optimal stock rate is 1.19 breeding ewes /ha. (5) The ME requirement of sheep grazed all year is 0.76,1.01,0.70 and 0.92 MJ/hd/day higher than sheep pen feed in warm sheds during cold seasons from November to February. (6) The model result shows Gansu Alpine fine wool sheep pen feed in warm sheds during cold seasons is not only an increase in livestock productivity, but whole-farm returns are also increased. The FBM and LPSOM will contribute to further research on achieving the sustainability and profitability of livestock production based on pasture.
