Greening of city square is an important part of urban construction. This article mainly studied plant configurations of the Xinhua Square, Ruyi Square, Xinshiji Square and Bayi Square of Hohhot, and Aerding Square, Yinhe Square and Qingnianyuan Square of Baotou. This article is to analyze and compare landscape efficiency and ecological benefits of the city squares, to find out the existing problems of city square greening, and provided suggestions for square greening in future.From the study, many conclusions were found. All the squares'green rates reached sixty percents except for the Municipal Square. The plant species of the squares were not abundant. The proportion of plant configuration was not coordinate. The proportion of particular specie was too big, while the role of other species was relatively small; the plant species were monotonous. Richness and diversity of species were poor. The proportion of the lawn area was too large in multilayer structures of greening in urban squares. The proportion of arbors, shrubs and lawns were non-conforming. Application of shrubs was relatively small. Seasonal landscape of the square were poor; flowering trees and shrubs were relatively few; foliage plants were also few. It was suggested that the choice of basic and vital trees should be increased in future in order to avoid similar landscape. The application of shrubs and foliage plants should be increased to ensure the change of seasonal landscape. The configuration of the proportion of plants should be coordinated. Configuration mode should be enriched.From the study, many conclusions also were found. The lawn accounted for the vast majority in the exertion of ecological efficiency. The reason was non-conforming of configuration structure, and the lawn proportion in multilayer structures of greening was too big. It was suggested that the use of shrubsshuold be increased, and the allocation of the proportion of plants should be optimized. It was beneficial to exert the best eco-efficiency.
