This paper firstly reported the gamete selection & reproduction fitness in Liriodendron by the method of combing conventional mating design and SSR molecular markers. The reproduction fitness of Liriodendron was estimated with the seed germination ratio of complete-diallel cross offsprings, and the gamete selection tendency was explored by the method of paternity analysis which was based on SSR markers informations with CERVUS software. The breeding system between L.chinense and L.tulipifera was also compared in this paper.Compared to L.tulipifera, the male and female reproduction fitness of L.chinense was 0.952, 0.888 respectively under artificial control pollination, both the male and female reproduction efficiency of L.chinense were lower than that of L.tulipifera. The differences of female reproduction fitness in parents were much bigger than that in male. For the fertility of progenies of various mating type, a trend was found in the order from high to low: outcross in L.tulipifera, reciprocal interspecies cross, outcross in L.chinense, interspecies hybrid, and selfing respectively. The pollen competition was evident in Liriodendro, and interspecies pollen competition played an important role in interspecific gamete selection. It seemed that both L.chinense and L.tulipifera preferred intraspecific mating. On the allocation strategy of breeding resources, reproduction efficiency was improved in L.chinense by increasing the number of reproduction resources, while the reproduction efficiency was ensured in L.tulipifera by improving the quality of reproduction resources. Naturally, L.tulipifera pollinated more than L.chinense. The fruiting rate of L.tulipifera was much bigger than that of L.chinense for either single flower or individual plant.
