Sugarcane breeding through hybridization and progeny selection is a major way to improve sugarcane varieties. The parental combination and sexual generation selection are both key techniques in the process of sugarcane breeding through hybridization and progeny selection, and are paid more attention by sugarcane breeders.Sugarcane F1 populations derived from 45 families were used as testing materials in this study, the variances, genetic abilities ,breeding values (or genetic values), economic breeding values(or economic genetic values) were analyzed for the 6 important quantitative characters which influenced the industry economic benefit mostly, namely cane yield, plant height, diameter, Stalk number, sugar content, fiber content in sugarcane,. The results showed that except the difference of plant height between females was not significant, the other differences of characters between females, males and families were significant or very significant. The broad-sense heritability of 6 characters were all higher than 50%, that of sucrose content was 90.21% and cane yield was 71.10%. The high broad-sense heritability indicated that these characters were suitable for selection in sexual generation in sugarcane, and it was necessary to enhance the selection intensity.Economic breeding values showed that Yuenong73-204,Yuetang85-177,Dezhe93-88,Yunzhe89-351,Guitang96-44,CP65-357,CP84-1198,Hocp93-746,Guitang94-119 and Zhanzhe74-141 belonged to the category with higher breeding values in the 29 female parents. CP84-1198,Funong91-4621,Yuetang89-240,Yunrui99-601,CP81-1254,Guitang00-122,ROC22,Yunrui05-808,Yunzhe 89-7 and Yunrui05-578 belonged to the category with higher breeding values in the 26 male parents.The family economy genetic values showed that Yuenong73-204×CP84-1198,Funong91-4710×Yuetang89-240,Yuetang91-976×CP84-1198,Yunzhe89-351×CP84-1198,CP84-1198×ROC22,Hocp93-746×Funong91-4621,Dezhe93-88×Yunrui99-601,Yuetang85-177×ROC22,Yuetang85-177×Guitang00-122,Guitang 96-44×ROC10,Hocp93-746×Zhanzhe74-141,Zhanzhe74-141×CP81-1254 and CP88-2143×Yuetang97-76 belonged to the category with higher economy genetic values in 45 families. They could be used as the most important families for variety breeding. According to the results of comprehensive evaluation this paper finally formulated family selection project for Des. 2009 and planned to select 446 clones from 23 families.
