Sugarcane is the most important sugar crop worldwide, breeding of new varieties is essential for the development of sugar industry. In sugarcane breeding program, choosing the parental materials is one of the basics. Parental materials developed locally are known as well advantage of inheriting adaptability to its progeny. Realizing the importance of locally bred parental materials, more and more sugarcane genotypes including Yunzhe,Yunrui and Dezhe were developed in Yunnan province were chosen for crossing. However, the larger the quantity is, the more confused cane breeders become. It is therefore essential for cane breeders to choose parental materials with high heritability and weed out the poor ones before determining cross combinations.Economic traits and general combining ability (GCA) of parents and special combining ability (SCA) of cross combinations in 81 families with at least one of the parents were locally developed were investigated in this study. Dynamic Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (DTOPSIS) and UPGMA were combined together for evaluating 34 parental materials aimed at providing sugarcane breeders with information on the further utilizing these sugarcane parents and these cross combinations. the result indicated that:Firstly, in view of stool weight and brix yield from field performance and the SCAs from cross combinations, five cross combinations Q138×Yunrui05-458, Yunrui05-662 X Q170, Yunrui04-82 X Funong91-21, Yunrui03-l1×RB72-454 and Yuetang73-204×Dezhe93-88 are potential for further utilization; the result of DTOPSIS proved Yunzhe94-343 X ROC22, Yunzhe94-343XNeijiang00-118, CP84-1198 X Yunzhe94-343, Yunzhe94-343 X ROC25, Q165 X Yunrui99-113, Mingtang69-421 X Yunrui05-782, Co419 X Yunrui99-155, Yunrui05-371 X Q138, Yunzhe94-375 X Brazi145 and Dezhe93-94×Q121 were the top ten cross combinations for breeding; among the above 15 cross combinations, Yunrui05-662 X Q170, Yunrui03-11 X RB72-454, Yuenong73-204 X Dezhe93-88, Yunzhe94-343 X ROC22 and Dezhe93-94×Q121 were not only high in SCA for stool weight and brix yield, but also high in selected percentage.Secondly, among all the 21 female parents, Yunrui 05-662, Yunrui 04-82, Yunrui 03-11, Yunzhe94-375, Dezhe93-88, Yunrui05-371 and Dezhe93-94 were high in GCA for brix yield in their progeny populations, which suggested their importance in being crossed as female parents.Thirdly, among all the 19 male parents, Yunrui05-458, Yunrui03-808, Yunzhe94-343, Dezhe93-88, Yunrui04-1051 and Yunrui95-148 were high in GCA for brix yield in their progeny populations, which suggested their importance in being crossed as male parents.
