0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% ethanol were applied in vase solution and the fresh preservation of them on cut carnation flower(scultivar Master)was tested. By analysis of vase life, flower weight, and flower-diameter, the best ethanol concentration was determined. On the basis, cut flower's SOD, POD, CAT, MDA, respiration rate, ACC synthase, ACC oxidase, ACC content, and ethylene release were measured respectively, and ethanol's action mechanism was explored. The results showed that1. 3% ethanol could effectively extend the vase life by 85.9%, increase cut-flower fresh weight and diameter.2. Ethanol maintained carnation cut flowers respiratory rate at a significantly lower level than control.3. 3% ethanol could increase SOD activity and reduce MDA content obviously, but POD and CAT activity were not influenced.4. 3% ethanol could restrain the production of ethylene obviously.5. 3% ethanol could reduce ACC synthase activity and ACC content, but the activity of ACC oxidase was not significantly changed.
