Oleanolic acid and ursolic acid were proved to possess a wide range of biological functions including anticancer,antioxidative,anti-inflammatory, hepatopro-tective, anti-allergic and hypolipidemic. More and more attention has been drawn to seek for plants which are rich in OA and UA content. Most former researches on the pharmaceutical functions of peony were focused on the root whose essential effective components are monoterpenes. Rare reaserches have been done on triterpenoid in peony and on the comprehensive utilization of peony's organs on the ground. In this study, the accumulation characteristics of OA and UA content in different peony varieties, different organs and during different developmental stages were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) The results were as following:1,The methods for determination of OA and UA were established by HPLC coupled with a C18 reversed phase column and a Waters2487 UV detector. OA and UA were detected at 210 nm wavelength with a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. The mobile phase consisted of methanol (A) and 0.1% phosphoric acid solution (B) with a ratio of 85:15 (A:B,v/v). The average recovery rates of OAand UA were 98.87% and 98.7%,respectively.2,OA and UA levels in three peony cultivars'Yangfeichuyu','Fenzhupan'and 'Hongfeng'were present at the highest level in leaves compared with stems and flowers.OA amounts in leaves were 72.7,1.3,11.4 times as those in stems, and 2.7, 23.5,21.2 times as those in flowers, respectively.UA amounts in leaves were 30.2, 39.7,35.6 times as those in stems, and 65.0,5.8,190.4 times as those in flowers, respectively. From May 1st to September 15th, OA and UA levels in leaves and stems of peony generally keep increasing and reached the maximum value in the middle of September. The maximum value of OA and UA in leaves of'Yangfeichuyu', 'Fenzhupan'and'Hongfeng'cultivars were 852.98,575.60,290.48μg/g FW and 924.94,827.36,378.99μg/g FW, respectively. The maximum value of OA and UA in stems of'Yangfeichuyu','Fenzhupan'and'Hongfeng'cultivars were 359.28,90.49, 43.90μg/g FW and 326.86,82.25,56.63μg/g FW, respectively. 3,OA content in the leaves of 47 peony cultivars varied from 66.73 to 618.12μg/g FW, and UA content varied from 157.77 and 215.30μg/gFW. The average values of OA and UA content were 171.62 and 227.57μg/g FW respectively. OA and UA contents were present at the maximum value of 618.12 and 633.26μg/g FW in the leaves of'Hongxiuqiu', and at the lowest value of 157.77 and 215.30μg/g FW in leaves of'Fenzilujin'and'Jiangshanruhua', respectively.
