The biological characteristics of Octodonta nipae,an invasive pests in Fujian Province, were studied under laboratory conditions in this paper.First, the morphological character of Octodonta nipae were conducted a preliminary observation;Second, the effects of temperature on the growth and development of Octodonta nipae were discussed in this paper. The egg, larva, pupa developments of Octodonta nipae on different temperatures were also conducted a preliminary study;Third, did preliminary study on the ability to tolerate hunger of Octodonta nipae; Finally the effect of food restriction on growth and development of Octodonta nipae were studied. Hope that through this study can control the affect of Octodonta nipae population growth factors and occurrence, provide the basis for the further researches and control the occurrence and damage of this pest effectively. Furthermore reduce Octodonta nipae on the palm of the hazards of economic or ornamental plants,to effectively enhance the value of palm plants in our country and the economic value of landscaping.1 Morphological Character of Octodonta nipaeThe morphological features of the various insect states of Octodonta nipae were observed and descripted;Measured the size of eggs and pupae, the larvae of the body length, head width,as well as male and female adult body length, pronotum length, width and antennae length; On various instar larvae,as well as male and female adults, pupae were weighed. Also compared with adults of Brontispa longissima(Gestro). The results show that:Octodonta nipae, instar larvae of each of its first wide-body length, body weight are significantly different in size, but the larvae of the same age difference between individuals is not obvious,so it can be to determine the larvae of this age;Octodonta nipae, the individual adult females is larger than the males;the adult body form of Octodonta nipae is smaller than Brontispa longissima(Gestro)'s.2 Effects of temperature on the development of Octodonta nipaeThe temperature is an important factor in the growth and development of Octodonta nipae.Observed its development, survival and reproduction at the different temperature condition(15.0,17.5,20.0,22.5,25.0,27.5,30.0,32.5 and 35.0℃). The study shows that Eggs can not survive at low temperature 15.0℃and 35.0℃high temperature. It can complete the development process, but the mortality rate of larvae is high, pupa eclosion rate is low,and adults can not lay eggs at 17.5℃and 32.5℃. It is could occur 3~4 generations in a year in Fuzhou,Fujian Province. Larval food consumption gradually increased with increasing temperature, food consumption decreases when the temperature is too high in a certain temperature range. And the 4th instar larvae entered the overeating phase.3 Study on hunger tolerance of Octodonta nipaeThe patience hunger ability of Octodonta nipae were studied in the lab. The results show that:the adult patience hunger capacity has clear difference under water or no water condition,in hunger state. They survived longer in the group of water supplying;the average survival time of water supplying is 10 times the group of no water. Density of its ability to tolerate starvation has little effect in the range of 17.5℃~ 32.5℃,the anti-hunger ability decreased with the increasing temperature, there are significant differences between the different temperature. At 17.5℃low temperature, female tolerated the longest hunger time,to 24.3±3.48d. Male tolerated the shortest hunger time,to 6.0±1.25d,and the anti-hunger time is only 8d at 32.5℃high temperature. The same time, analyzed the reason of anti-hunger ability between male and female, and the result is that the anti-hunger ability of adult female is slightly stronger than the male's. 4 Effects of food restriction on the development of Octodonta nipaeThe research studied the effects of its growth and development under different starvation time treatment. It shows that, the pest's development would make changes slowly, through limiting feeding,in order to inhibit their growth. Octodonta nipae development duration shortened in the condition of setting up different food restrictions With the increase in daily feeding time. It can not complete the Generation development that the daily feeding time was 1h,4h and 8h. From the test results,Octodonta nipae has strong resistance to hunger, food limiting has little impact on the emergence rate of pupa. There is also little impact on the generation in the condition of short-term hunger. Octodonta nipae can still grow and develop.
