Information-based forestry being currently one mainstream direction in forestry development, Expert System has become one of the most constantly-employed in a broad range of field-research subjects. Focusing on cultivation of Ginkgo as well as prevention and elimination of plant disease and insect pests, this paper mainly investigates the growing characteristic of Ginkgo and the kinds and biological properties of Ginkgo pests and develops Ginkgo Planting Expert System (GPES). The tentative results are as follows:1. GPES has made the intelligent diagnoses of pests and diseases of ginkgo possible. As long as the average planter can describe the basic external features of Ginkgo biloba, GPES, a knowledge base system formed through putting the knowledge of experts into digital form and analyzing and matching the symptoms of various diseases and insect pests, can determine the pest status of Ginkgo, carry out the sorting process by calculating the probability of a variety of diseases and insect pests and then give corresponding suggestions, which are user-friendly for growers to take prompt preventive measures and reduce their losses to a minimum.2. GPES can intelligently distinguish ginkgo varieties. Identification of Ginkgo is very important for the growers, traders and consumers. Able to allow the user to enter more than one external characteristics of Ginkgo, sequence the possible outcomes according to the matching degree, and provide further analysis of each outcome and thus reduce the user's identification ambiguity, the function of identifying ginkgo species realized by GPES bears high reliability.3. GPES realizes human-computer dialogue by imitation of virtual reality. By using the currently popular browsers with Flex animation technology embedded, the system can convert the traditional text communication and information query into human dialogues under stimulated reality, and thus make the system more human, which is not without benefit for the promotion of the system to ordinary users.GPES introduced in this paper is built by employing the tri-constructional mode"Brower/Web Server/Database", the ASP.NET. technique, the logic programming language Prolog for the processing of knowledge base as well as the module of Ginkgo pests prevention, all of which contribute to intelligent decision-making. Users need only a browser to use GPES as it is based on the Internet, which, together with its enhanced extensibility and compatibility as well as reduced complexity and workload in system updating and maintenance, boasts a wider range of application. Hopefully GPES can meet the requirement of the development of future planting expert system.
