Calf diarrhea is a kind of serious illness which frequently occurs in livestock industry, and it can cause serious damage. The antibiotic has made a good clinical progress in the treatment of calf diarrhea. But according to the food safety requirements, the antibiotic poisonous side effect and the medicine residual question have received an increasing attention, moreover the long-term use of antibiotic is also easy to cause the disease germ to obtain the drug resistance, the antibiotic will be gradually limited or even forbidden. The traditional Chinese medicine is the pure natural material including many kinds of biological effective components, besides it has many characteristics, such as antibacterial, the sterilization, low poisonous, the bacterium are not easy to obtain the drug resistance, with no residual or remains lowly and so on, simultaneously, the medicine possesses nutritional function. Using the traditional Chinese medicine treating calf diarrhea solely has become the hot spot throughout the world, which is getting the increasing concern from the domestic and foreign experts.Bacteriostasis experiments in vitro were done to investigate the effects of Chinese herbal medicines, such as Fructus mume, Rhizome picrorhizae, Bighead atractylodes rhizome, Costusroot, Liquorice, Astragalus, mongholicus, Fructus forsythiae, Radix scutellariae, Flos lonicerae, against pathogenic bacteria, including Escherichia coli O8, Clostridieum welchii type B, Clostridieum welchii type C and Salmonella typhimurium. the results indicated that Fructus mume, Rhizome picrorhizae, Bighead atractylodes rhizome, Costusroot, Liquorice, Astragalus mongholicuscan be chosen to be a compound prescriptions. Four complex prescriptions have been contrived in different extraction process and proportion. The effects of bacteriostatic tests in vitro showed that Fructus mume, Rhizome picrorhizae, Bighead atractylodes rhizome, Costusroot, Liquorice, Astragalus mongholicus are active against four main pathogenic bacteria leading to calf diarrhea. the MICs of the four main pathogenic bacteria was 15.63, 15.63, 31.25, 31.25 mg·mL-1 repectively. The results of the acute toxicity test indicated that the LD50 of the complex prescription extracted from the traditional Chinese medicine was 11534mg·kg-1, which is more than 5000 mg·kg-1 and this exhibited this prescription was innoxious substance.Small intestine driving test, in vitro tests, anti-diarrhea experiment, relieving fever experiment, anti-inflammatory experiment and alleviating pain experiment were adopted to test the effect of the complex prescription extracted from the traditional Chinese medicine in pharmacodynamics study. The results of small intestine driving test and in vitro tests showed that the drug could inhibit calf diarrhea bowel movement in vitro and reduced the contraction rate and relaxation time, and has the antagonism action to small bowel movements caused by the pilocarpine nitrate. Compared with normal control group, the drug could reduce the advance rate of small bowel movements in mice in vivo significantly(p<0.01). The result of anti-diarrhea experiment showed that the drug with high, medial and low dosage could obviously inhibit the times of diarrhea caused by senna in rat, compared with the control group, the difference was significant (p<0.01). The result of relieving fever experiment showed that the drug with high, medial and low dosage could obviously inhibit the fervescence in rabbit, compared with the control group, the difference was significant (p<0.01). The result of anti-inflammatory experiment showed that the drug with high, medial and low dosage could effectively inhibit auricle swelling in mice, swelling inhibitory rate were 57.5%, 54.7% and 42.0% respectively. The result of alleviating pain experiment indicated that the drug had obvious effect on alleviating pain, the relieving pain rate in high, medial and low dosage group were 52.7%, 36.8% and 27.9% respectively. The mixed material-water reflux condensation method was selected to extract aetherolea in Atrctylodes macrocephala, Aucklandiae, Astragali, Hicorice root, thereafter the extraction was condensed in decompression after alcohol precipitation, ethanol extraction was used in extracting in coptis chinensis and dried plum. Mixturing two extractiongs after condensed, this mixture was dried into fine powder, which was mixed with dextrin in a ratio of 1﹕1, under reduced pressure. 95% alcohol was hired as wetting agent, after that the mixture was granulated by sifging. The results indicated that traditional Chinese medicine granules against bacteria caused calf diarrhea had reached the requirements for drug granules, and with a good stability. The results of clinical pharmacodynamics experiment showed that the drug with high, medial and low dosage group have remarkable treatment effect to the calf diarrhea, and the effective rate of high dosage group was 96.15%, and the cure rate was 88.46%. Therefore, the Traditional Chinese medicine granules could cure the calf diarrhea induced by bacteria fastly and effectively. In concludes, the LD50 of the compound preparation was more than 5000mg·kg-1 was innoxious substance, and it had obvious pharmacodynamic effects on adjusting the functions of gastrointestin, anti-diarrhea, relieving fever, anti-inflammatory and alleviating pain. And it had obvious effect on calf diarrhea induced by bacteria. It would be safe and effective, if used follow formulary dose and methods.
