Objective: To investigate the relationship between the Parathyroid hormone (PTI-l), the Parathyroid hormone related Protein (PTI-IrP) and TCM syndromes in chronic renal failure. Methods: Radioimmunoassay (RIA) was used to detect serum C- PTH and plasma PTI-LrP in 92 CRF patients and 30 healthy persons (control group). All CRF patients were divided into four groups: Spleen Qi and Kidney Qi Deficiency (SQKQD), both Qi and Yin Deficiency (QYD), the liver Yin and Kidney Yin Deficiency (LYKYD), and both Yin and Yang Deficiency (YYD). Results: (1) The level of serum PTH and plasma PTIIrP in CRF patients with SQKQD~. QYLX LYKYD. YYD were Higher than those in control group (P<0.0 1). The level of serum PTH in the SQKQD group was the lowest, while the level of plasma PTI-LrP in the LYKYD group was the lowest. (2) In the different stages of chronic renal failure, the level of serum PThI and plasma PTHrP were higher than that in control I. group (P<0.O1). (3) The analysis of correlation showed that the level of Scr, BUN, ALP, Hb and BP was positively correlated to the level of serum PTH (PO.05). The level of serum PTH and plasma PTHrP were not correlated to the course of disease and the age of the patients (P>O.05). Conclusion: (1) the level of serum PTH may offer a reference index to the TCM syndromes in CRF. (2) The level serum PThI and plasma PTHrP can served as a reference index of impairment of renal function. They increase with the development of renal failure. (3) The level of serum PTII can not offer a reference index to the TCM syndromes in CRF. (4) The levels of serum PTH and plasma PTHrP are correlated with the extent of renal insufficiency, but they have different distribution in TCM syndrome and different relations with Ca, P, Fib, BP and ALP.
