Wu Qiang ABSTRACT Purpose: In the present study, the effect of acupuncture at the different time on peripheral serum follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) levels in female rhesus was assessed. Methods: According to 2 X 2 factorial design, 11 female rhesuses were randomly divided into normal control group (3 rhesuses), none- point control group (2 rhesuses), morning control group (2 rhesuses), night control group (2 rhesuses) and both morning and night control group (2 rhesuses).The effect of acupuncture on peripheral serum FSH, LII, E2 and T levels was observed respectively. The peripheral serum FSH & LH levels were estimated by bioassay in vitro and E2 & T by radioimmunoassay. Results: (1) The morning, night and both morning and night control group had inhibitory effect on serum FSH, LH, E2 and T, while normal and none-point control group did not have such effect. (2) The peak ascending velocity (PAV) and peak increasing value(PJV) of FSH, LII, E2 and T was lower in the three time groups than that in the normal control group (PO.05). (3) Among the three experimental groups, the order from strong to weak of PAV and PIV of FSH and T was morning group, both morning and night group and night group; that of E2 was night group, both morning and night group and morning group; that of LH was morning group, night group and both morning and night group. (4) There was no obvious difference between acupuncturing once a day and twice a day. Conclusion: (1) It had effective inhibitory effect on serum FSH, LH, E2 and T to acupuncture on the eve of peak of those hormone. (2) It had the best effective inhibitory effect on serum FSH, LH and T to acupuncture in the morning and on serum E2 in the evening. (3) By acupuncturing to inhibit genetic endocrine hormone, the effectiveness for a given period of time is about 24 hours. (4) The inhibitory effect is related to the function of hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis and adrenal cortex.
