objective To investigate the relationship between IGFBP-1 or SHBG and Insulin resistance in postmenopausal women.Methouds 58 Postmenopausal women (31 obese and 27 nonobese ) and 43 pre-menopausal women (23 obese and 20 nonobese) were studied. Serum insulin and IGFBP-1 and SHBG were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. True insulin was measured by Electrochemiluminescence immunoassay(ECLI) , blood glucose and cholesterol and triglyceid and uric acid were assayed by automatic biochemical analyzer. Insulin sensitive index (ISI) was calculated by 1/FPG FINS.Results The SHBG were significantly lower and the WHR or TC or LDL and FPG significantly higher in postmenopausal women than in pre-menopausal women(P< 0.05) . However, there were no difference in ISI, IGFBP-1 and IGF-1 concentrations (P>0. 05) in two groups . The ISI in postmenopausal women were positively correlated with SHBG(P<0. 001)and IGFBP-10. 05); both IGFBP-1 and SHBG were negatively with BMI(P<0. 001 ,P<0. 05). WHR or FPG or TG and TC or LDL or FIRI and FTI were significantly higher in the postmenopausal obese women than in the pre-menopausal nonobese women. In postmenopausal obese women ,the ISI showed positive correlation with IGFBP-1(P<0. 01) and SHBG(P<0. 01) . WHR or TC or LDL and FPG were significantly increased and the SHBG were significantly decreased (P<0. 01) in postmenopausal obese women than in pre-menopausal obese women (P<0. 01). The FIRI or FPI were significantly higher (P<0. 01) and the SHBG were significantly lower (P<0. 01) in postmenopausal nonobese women than in pre-menopausal nonobese women. The FTI were significantly higher and ISI or IGFBP-1 or SHBG were significantly lower (P<0. 01 ,P<0. 01 ,P<0. 05) in pre-menopausal obese women than in pre-menopausal nonobese women. The FTI were significantly higher and ISI or IGFBP-1were significantly lower in postmenopausal obese women than in postmenopausal nono-bese women (P<0. 01).Conclusions ISI were positively correlated with serum IGFBP 1 and SHBG in postmenopausal obese women. SHBG were correlated not only with obesity but also with menopause . The IGFBP-1 were negatively correlated mainly with obesity.
