The genus Phyllostachys with more than 50 species is widespread in China. Considerable plants ditribut in zhejiang province. Most species of the genus have been used in folk medicine in China. The leaves of Phyllostachys species has been used for the treatment of fever,cough,children convulsion etc. in China.lt was reported recently that the extract of Leaves of Phyllostachys has high capabilites of disconnecting NDMA compost and scavenging sodium nitrite,also the extract shows more excellent activitties of scavenging superoxide and hydroxyl radicals than Vitamine C and benzoic acid in vitro. In addition,the antitumour activity against sarcoma-180 and immunity improvement in mice has been reported. However,there is no report about the etractly chemical constituents so far. This paper deals with the chemical constituents of leaves of Phyllostachys heterocycla .This species,which is believed to have better therapeutical effects in the main producing area,is native to the zhejiang province in China.By the means of silic gel CC,sephadex LH20 CC,as well as Preparative HPLC,eleven compounds including one flavonoid and ten phenolic compounds were isolated from leaves of Phyllostachys heterocycla. According to the spectro data,They wre determined as Vanillin(BL-l),Syringic aldehyde (BL-2),p-Hydroxybenzaldehyde(BL-4),Vanillic acid (BL-5),Syringic acid (BL-6),4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid,ethyl ester(BL-7),p-hydroxybenzoic acid (BL-8),trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid (BL-9),cis-p-hydroxycinnamic acid (BL-10),Tricin(BL-ll),Caffeic acid (BL-12). All above the compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time. At the same time,we developed a sequence of methods which combines sephadex LH20 CC and Preparative HPLC to isolate natrural products. This method is suitable for the Preparative purification of aqueous or polar compounds.lt was proved that this method is effective and rapid in isolation during this research work.
