Objective To observe the vision and retinal histopathologic findings of retinal breaks which were treated with Histoacryl. And to access the useful value and the clinical prospect of Histoacryl. Methods A total sixteen healthy white adult New Zealand rabbits were divided at random into 2 groups: the treatment group and the control group. All the experimental rabbits were made into rhegmatogenous retinal detachment models, The rabbits in the treatment group were given Histoacryl. Subsequently, to investigate the visual function, the reattachment of retina underwent electroretinogram (ERG) , B-scan examination, indirect ophthalmoscopy and the global anatomic feature. After various interval times of the experiment, the removed eyeballs of the rabbits were examined with light microscope and transmissing electromicrocope (TEM). The results would suggest the effect of retinal changes treated by Histoacryl. Results All the experimental groups were observed differently at the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 8th postoperation week. In the treatment group, all retinal breaks in eight model breaks were cured, and the retina in seven eyes attached (87.5%). Only one surgical failure was development of proliferativevetrioretinopathy in one eye during four weeks period. And five eyes had visual function (62.5%) .At the last period ,the visual function of two eyes recovered to nearly the same level of prooperation .The feature detected by light microscope and TEM displayed that Histoacryl had little toxic and side effect on retinal tissue in the early time. As the surgical trauma closed up, the reaction effect decreased little by little. Compared to this, the retinal tissue of rabbits in the control group were more abnormal. No retina reattached and all of the eyes lost the visual function during the observal intervals. The histopathology showed that every layer structure of the retina had apparently degenerative changes, but that in the percent of retinal attachment in two groups had apparent difference. (p=0.0014)Conclusion There were some good effect on the case having retinal breaks with Histoacryl. And the results of visual function postoperationally were satisfied .The toxic changes of retinal tissue were related to the quantity of Histoacryl. In sum, the strict usage of Histoacryl in surgery was the successful point. Retinal tears closed by Histoacryl would be potentially useful as a new surgerical technique.
