Studies On The Antiulcer Constituents Of The Whole Herb Of Plantago Asiatica L.

For thousands of years, Chinese Traditional Drugs have been widely used to treat gastriointesttinal diseases clinically and proved to have curative effect to some extent. Effective parts, even some active constituents of some drugs have been separated , also been proved of their pharmacological functions. To develop the new anti-ulcer drugs, we had done pharmacological experiments in 8 kinds of Chinese Traditional Drugs, which had been usually used in gastritis and gastric ulcer clinically and the basic studies of their active constituentshad not been done. It was concluded that water soluble parts of the whole herb of Plantago Asiatica L. has the best activities in anti-ulcer. So it becomes significant to study the relation between the constituents and effects.Plantago Asiatica L. is a kind of plant of Plantago of Plantaginaceae, used in the form of whole herb or seed. Cold in property , bitter in flavour. It has the effects of eliminating heat, inducing diuresis ,resolve phlegm, cooling the blood, removing toxic substances. It is applied in edema, dribbling and painful micturition, diarrhea due to summer-heat and dampness,bleeding such as hematemesis and epistaxis, cough due to heat phlegm,various kind of suppurative infections on the body surface.The water soluble parts of Chinese Traditional Drugs have been difficult to be seperated to their active constituents. They may have not only many active constituents but also many constituents that are not easy to remove and will affect testing. So Active constituents are hard to be purified. But most of active parts of Chinese Traditional Drugs are from water decoctions, so water decoctions have accord with the demands of experiences of thousands of years.Guided by the pharmacological activities , water decoction of Plantago Asiatica L. was used .By using the methods of extraction of n-Butyl alcohol, polyamide column chromatography ,silica column chromatography, dry column chromatography, two compounds were isolated from the whole herb of Plantago Asiatica L. According to their physical and chemical constants and spectral data, they were identified as I .Potassium Chloride and II .6-hydroxyl geniposide. Both were first found from Plantago Asiatica L.
